'I could show you better than I can tell you': Raheem Mostert ready to get back to usual form with Raiders

Raheem Mostert has a few scores to settle.

His first point of emphasis after signing with the Raiders on Wednesday is to prove his ability to stay on the field. He described his 2024 season as a disappointing one, missing four games due to chest and hip injuries that plagued him throughout his last season with the Miami Dolphins. In the 13 games he did appear in, he averaged 3.3 yards per carry with two rushing touchdowns. It was vastly different stat line compared to the player who torched defenses just a season prior.

Mostert enjoyed his best NFL season in 2023, rushing for a league-leading 18 touchdowns with a career-high 1,012 yards on 209 carries. In the process, he became the second-oldest player in league history to record their first 1,000-yard season at 31 years old. The role he played parlayed into the Dolphins being the second-highest scoring unit in the league that season and compiling their most wins in a year since the 2008 season.

"I would say it's all about health," Mostert said in his introductory press conference. "Obviously, as a player you're going through ups and downs in the health world, but I've managed to be able to stay healthy on a healthy track. And then also, performance. That's another thing. You've got to produce out there on the field. In regards to the production level, man, you have to have high production in order to grow as a player and then also within the team game."

"I'm always going to have a chip on my shoulder no matter where I go, no matter what I'm doing," he added. "And last year's performance wasn't up to my standard, wasn't up to my par."

Along with on-field production, he seems determined to provide stability and leadership to a young Raiders running back room. Mostert joins a unit that ranked last in the league in rushing yards last season. The veteran back is entering 11th year in the league, while his new teammates among the position group have 10 years of NFL experience combined.

"I kind of take that with pride," Mostert said of being a leader. "One thing that I truly try to implement within the running back room, and then even within the locker room is, 'Hey look, you help me feed my family, I'll help you feed yours.' That was just a saying that I picked up along the way in my career, and that saying just stuck with me throughout these years. If you help me feed my family, I'll help you feed yours. We all work together.

"It's never really supposed to be any grudge within a team. It's all supposed to be team driven, team aspect, team work hard and go out there and produce and have fun doing it as well. Wins, sometimes you're going to get some ugly wins, sometimes you're going to get some really good wins, but at the end of the day, a win is a win."

Mostert's decision to join the Silver and Black comes with familiarity with the coaching staff as well. He's had a fair share of battles against Pete Carroll back in the NFC West as a member of the San Francisco 49ers from 2016-21. But he now reunites with his former head coach Chip Kelly, who signed him as an undrafted free agent to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. The following season, Kelly brought him on to the practice squad for the 49ers.

While there have been eight years since Mostert has played in Kelly's system, he's confident the re-acclimation period won't be a lengthy one.

"I noticed that it's definitely tailored to the type of run scheme that I'm used to, the type of game that I can form my game into," the running back said. "And just talking with Chip last week, he brought it up too, that it's all similar. The verbiage is going to be different obviously, but everything is relatively the same."

"I'm already feeling really good coming in this offseason, and I'm just super excited to showcase my work ethic and everything that I've done and worked up to thus far," he later added. "I could show you better than I could tell you. That's a saying that I truly live by. I could show you better than I could tell you."
