100 Days of 100 Jersey Numbers - 73

For a total of 100 days, we'll take a look at the men who have played for the Raiders jersey number by jersey number. This series will highlight some of the greatest players in NFL history. In some cases, the player and jersey number are synonymous. In other cases, the jersey number represents sustained greatness at a particular position. Some players are superstitious about their jersey number. Whatever the case may be, jersey numbers are an important part of the fabric of professional football.

Charley Hannah played for the Raiders from 1983-88.

Fourteen players have worn No. 73 in Raiders history, including a couple of durable offensive linemen who contributed to Raiders offensive attack.

Billy Ray Locklin – LB/DE – 1960

Locklin played in two games for the Raiders in 1960 before moving on to the Canadian Football League.

Jim Brewington – T – 1961

Brewington, originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers, played in 14 games for the Raiders.

Chuck McMurtry – DT – 1962-63

McMurtry joined the Raiders after two years with the Buffalo Bills. He played in 25 games for the Raiders.

John Diehl – DT – 1965

Diehl joined the Raiders after four years with the Baltimore Colts. He played in eight games in 1965.

Greg Kent – T – 1966

Originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1965, Kent played in seven games for the Raiders in 1966. He went on to play for the Lions in 1968.

Richard Sligh – T – 1967

The Raiders selected Sligh in the 10th round of the 1967 NFL Draft out of North Carolina Central. He played in eight games in 1967.

Thomas Gipson – DT – 1971

The Raiders selected Gipson in the 14th round of the 1971 NFL Draft. He played in four games for the Raiders in 1971.

Dave Browning – DE – 1978-82

The Raiders selected Browning in the 2nd round of the 1978 NFL Draft out of Washington. He played in 65 games with 59 starts. He recorded one interception and five fumble recoveries. Browning was a member of the Raiders Super Bowl XV championship team. He went on to play for New England.

Charley Hannah – G – 1983-88

Hannah joined the Raiders after six years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in 71 games with 65 starts and was a member of the Raiders Super Bowl XVIII championship team.

James Fitzpatrick – T – 1990-91

Fitzpatrick joined the Raiders after four years with the San Diego Chargers. He played in 27 games with five starts.

Charles McRae – T – 1996

McRae joined the Raiders after five years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in 13 games with one start.

Darryl Ashmore – G/T – 1998-00

Ashmore joined the Raiders after playing for the St. Louis Rams and the Washington Redskins. He wore No. 73 from 1998-00 and switched to No. 77 in 2001. He played in 61 games with seven starts.

Frank Middleton – G – 2001-04

Middleton joined the Raiders after four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in 46 games with 42 starts. He was a member of the NFL's top-ranked offense in 2002 and started at left guard in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Matt McCants – T – 2013-present

McCants joined the Raiders after spending time with the New York Giants in 2012. He appeared in 11 games for the Silver and Black in 2014.
