When the Raiders take the field on Monday Night Football, it won't just be players participating in the NFL's My Cause My Cleats initiative.
Head Coach Antonio Pierce, President Sandra Douglass Morgan, General Manager Tom Telesco and Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly are also taking the opportunity to promote causes and organizations they value with custom shoes.
"When I played, we didn't have this," Pierce said. "I think it's a great opportunity for you to really stand out and speak on what you believe.
"For a lot of guys, there's a lot of stories throughout the league. Not all of us come from the same backgrounds, different things that get us to this one spot to play in the National Football League. So, for the league to recognize and allow you to have that moment and obviously put this together is huge."
Like linebacker Robert Spillane, Douglass Morgan is supporting Olive Crest, a local foundation focused on "strengthening, equipping, and restoring children and families in crisis."
"The mission is building safe and happy homes," she said. "This organization is truly dedicated to eradicating child abuse but also ensuring that children in the foster care system are able to be paired in homes – whether it be two or three children [or] with their siblings."
For Telesco, the decision to advocate for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was a personal one.
"It's near and dear to my heart," he said. "I had people close to me affected with the disease, both family and friends. I know there's other organizations too that work with MS, but this one in particular does a really, really nice job."
Kelly is spotlighting Heart Power, his own nonprofit organization that provides support to youth and their families, while also hosting annual C.H.A.M.P. youth football camps.
"The name is coined from Vince Lombardi," Kelly said. "He said, once a man has committed to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him, and that's called heart power. Once you've made this commitment, nothing will stop you short of success."
Just as Raiders players are supporting a variety of causes from mental health awareness to support for active duty military and veterans, Pierce is bringing attention to She Is Hope LA, a nonprofit that works to empower single mothers and their families by providing essential resources, education and support.
"Raised by my mother, she did everything she could to provide for me," Pierce said. "A lot of different things that she pulled away from her own personal life and work life to give me the opportunity to actually stand in front of you today.
"That was something that I thought really connected with me. And anything that you can do and show that and show other mothers that you appreciate them. Even being a father myself, I'm a momma's boy, and I know most of us are. So, that's really special when you can make the other mothers around the world, make sure that you just take that second to recognize them."
