Top moments from Episode 1 of Behind The Shield

Silver and Black Productions released the first episode of the new season of Behind The Shield on Monday night.

Here are three top moments from the episode, available now on the Raiders YouTube channel and Raiders.com.

An Emphasis on Competition

Titled, "Compete", the first episode of Behind The Shield highlights the central theme of Pete Carroll's figurative manual to building a program.

"The philosophy is really always compete," Caroll said. "I'll use the competition word so much that people get sick of hearing me say it. Competing, to me, is defined as striving for excellence. It's not about trying to beat somebody and rub their nose in the dirt. That's not it. It's about striving. In everything that you're doing, you're trying to be the best you can possibly be. That's the mentality that drives this program."

In addition to being the backbone of team-building under Carroll, General Manager John Spytek discusses how a player's competitive nature factors into talent evaluation.

"We want fast, big, explosive players," he said. "We will find those too, but the competitive urgency, the instincts, the natural football skills, those are the best players I've been around. That's the kind of stuff that gets me rolling. I just have this belief that no matter what, we can turn any draft pick - first all the way to seventh - into a really good player."

Tom Brady's Speech

At his introductory press conference alongside Spytek, Carroll made it clear that Tom Brady's football acumen is an asset for the organization.

"There's a lot that goes into this," Carroll said. "But to think about how fortunate we are to have Tom Brady with us, it's just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Behind The Shield gives an exclusive glimpse at Tom Brady's first day inside Raiders headquarters.

"If there's one thing I know about football, it's the ultimate team sport," Brady told players, coaches and staff members who welcomed him into the building. "It takes every single person.

"Every day is hard as an NFL player," Brady added. "Every day is hard as an NFL organization. And you know why it's hard, because that's where the value is. Because if it was easy, you wouldn't value it. When someone gives you something, it doesn't mean that much. When you go out there and you earn it, well that's when it matters the most. I just appreciate – this means more to me than anything in the world to see you guys here. For Mark [Davis] to allow me the opportunity to be a part of this franchise for the rest of my life is a dream come true."

Patrick Graham Stays a Raider

After interviewing for head coach and defensive coordinator vacancies during the offseason, the Raiders announced on January 31 that Patrick Graham would return as the team's defensive coordinator.

This episode features Graham's first comments since returning to the Silver and Black.

"Getting a chance to work with Pete, very excited about that," Graham said. "In terms of just the little bit of time I've had with him, it's been really fun working with him in terms of just talking football, going over scheme, going over personnel. The energy level is there. [We] come from different trees, but good defensive football is good defensive football. We know what we're trying to do. We're trying to stop the run, eliminate the explosives and get after the quarterback."
