Carl Weathers posthumously receives Hollywood Walk of Fame star

Actor Carl Weathers was honored posthumously Thursday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Weathers, who passed away in February, will forever be linked to cinema history with an acting career that spanned over five decades and included roles in the "Rocky" franchise, "Happy Gilmore," "Action Jackson" and "Predator." His films have been enjoyed by millions and grossed over $1 billion in the box office.

"The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is proud to honor the late Carl Weathers with the second Sports Entertainment Walk of Fame star," said Ana Martinez, producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies. "Carl left an indelible mark on the worlds of sports and entertainment, and it is our honor to immortalize his legacy on our iconic sidewalk. We are happy to know that Weathers was actively involved in preparing to receive his star before his passing, and that he was very proud to be recognized with this prestigious honor."

But before Weathers made his notable voyage to Hollywood, he was an Oakland Raider.

Weathers played two seasons in the Silver and Black from 1970-71 as a linebacker, appearing in eight career games. He is the fourth NFL player and first Raider to have a star on the Walk of Fame.

Former Raiders defensive lineman Grant Irons, whose father Gerald played two seasons with Carl, two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback Jim Plunkett, teammate Phil Villapiano and Raiders Owner Mark Davis were in attendance at Thursday's ceremony to celebrate Weathers' life and accomplishments.

"He traded the Silver and Black for the silver screen," Davis said. "What remained was the underlying philosophy of the Raider way. An unyielding will to win and an unwavering commitment to excellence. When Carl transitioned from football to acting, he didn't just step into a new career, he dominated on the way to becoming a star of stars and created an unforgettable legacy as an icon of film and television."

"Carl wasn't just a character in a movie, his portrayals inspired millions," Davis added. "Carl Weathers will always be remembered than more than just an actor. He's a trailblazer, a game changer and my friend."

Weathers' two sons, Matthew and Jason, accepted the award in their late father's honor.

The star is located at 7076 Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue near The Gateway to the Walk of Fame.
