Charles Woodson won the coin toss and deferred the Raiders choice to the start of the second half. WR Chris Conley dropped deep to receive K Sebastian Janikowski's opening kickoff. Conley fielded the kick 9 yards deep in the end zone, stepped on the end line for a touchback and the Chiefs started at the 20. QB Alex Smith struck first with a 25-yard touchdown pass to WR Jeremy Maclin. K Cairo Santos added the extra point and the Chiefs led 7-0 with 10:52 left in the 1st quarter.
RB Taiwan Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 29 yards to the Oakland 25. The Raiders drove to midfield before the Chiefs forced a punt. P Marquette King's punt bounced out of bounds at the Chiefs 13. The Chiefs faced 4th and 1 at the Oakland 43 and converted as Smith ran the option for a first down. The Chiefs padded their lead with a 3-yard RB Spencer Ware touchdown run over the left side. Santos added the extra point and the Chiefs led 14-0 with :51 left in the 1st quarter.
Jones hit a seam up the middle returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards all the way to the Chiefs 38. The drive stalled at the 11 and Janikowski came on. The 29-yard kick got the Raiders on the board and cut the Chiefs lead to 14-3 with 13:40 left in the 2nd quarter.
Conley returned the ensuing kickoff to the Chiefs 16. The Raiders finally forced a Chiefs punt after the home team crossed midfield. P Dustin Colquitt's 37-yard boot was downed inside the Raiders 10. The Raiders managed one first down before the Chiefs forced a punt. Frankie Hammond Jr. returned the King punt to the Kansas City 36. The Raiders got the ball back with a TJ Carrie interception at the Chiefs 46.
The Chiefs returned the favor with an interception in the end zone. Kansas City started at the 20 with 3:34 left in the 2nd quarter. CB David Amerson picked Smith off on the next play and raced down the sideline for the touchdown. He was called for taunting on the play and the penalty was enforced on the kickoff. Janikowski's PAT was good and the Chiefs lead was cut to 14-10 with 3:27 left in the 2nd quarter.
Janikowski's ensuing kickoff bounced out of bounds and the Chiefs started at the 40. The Raiders forced a Chiefs punt, which Jeremy Ross fair caught at the Oakland 9. The Chiefs eventually forced a King punt and took over at the Kansas City 25 after a 52-yard punt and a short return. Smith took a knee and the Chiefs took a 14-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Ross returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter to the Oakland 29. The Raiders gained a yard as they went three and out. Hammond Jr. returned King's punt to the Kansas City 24. The Raiders would eventually force a Colquitt punt. Ross called for and made a fair catch at the Oakland 10.
Carr was sacked twice and the Raiders went three and out. King's punt was blocked out of the end zone for a safety and the Chiefs took a 16-10 lead with 8:59 left in the 3rd quarter. King's free kick was returned to the Kansas City 47. Smith found TE Demetrius Harris for a 15-yard TD pass. The PAT was good and the Chiefs extrended their lead to 23-10 with 7:03 left in the 3rd quarter.
Jones returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 22. The Raiders managed one first down but were forced to punt. King's punt was downed at the Chiefs 29. The Raiders eventually forced a punt and Colquitt came on. Ross called for and made a fair catch at the Oakland 22 after a 38-yard punt.
The Raiders drive stalled and King came on to punt. The kick bounced out of bounds at the Kansas City 19. The Raiders managed to force a field goal attempt. Santos' 39-yard kick was good but a holding penalty wiped it out. Santos tried again from 49 and Kansas City botched the attempt and failed to convert. The Raiders took over at the Oakland 28. Carr connected with WR Michael Crabtree for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and the Chiefs lead was trimmed to 23-17 with 2:01 left in the 4th quarter.
The Chiefs recovered Janikowski's onside kick attempt and took over at the Oakland 47. The Raiders held the Chiefs to a 3-and-out and Colquitt came on to punt. Ross called for an made a fair catch at the Oakland 11. The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive and the Chiefs held on to win.
