Quick Hits: Antonio Pierce, Raiders ready to hit the ground running in training camp

The Las Vegas Raiders have made it to Costa Mesa, California, to open the first part of training camp.

On Tuesday, a day before the team's first practice, Head Coach Antonio Pierce said there's only one pace they'll be going out of the gate.

"There's nothing slow about what we're doing. We're hitting the field running," Pierce said as he addressed the media.

On his timeline for making a decision at starting quarterback:

"When it's right, when it's obvious. Like, 'OK, this is a no-brainer.' No need to rush it but when it's clear and it's evident then we need to make that decision to move forward."

On his initial thoughts of Gardner Minshew:

"His personality is so unique. So free spirited but more importantly, he's a great teammate. He loves to compete. His attitude, his purpose, each and every rep he takes, you can see there's a driven player there that's always been the underdog. And that's a good thing for the Raiders because that carries on to the rest of the team and guys feed of that."

On his early analysis of the defense:

"Year 3 with [defensive coordinator] Patrick Graham, the communication, the continuity, the ability to play with one another – it was a really good spring with our defense. They were gelling well. Add Christian [Wilkins] in there, it's like he's been with us for the last couple of years. They've got to keep picking it up. It is the strength of our team, no need to lie about. They're really good and they've got to be good this year."

On his main objective for team going into camp:

"Bonding, competition, physicality, creating the Raider identity. And then really putting our stamp on what we want our play style to look like on offense, defense and special teams."

On differences of going into training camp as a coach instead of a player:

"I'm more confident [as a coach] because as a player, you didn't know what to expect. You were fighting for your life. Training camp back then was six weeks long, it was two-a-days and it hurt. Here, you can really gauge and control the tempo of your players and practice. ... You control the narrative, obviously, as a coach and I'm going to do what's best for the players."

On his mentality going into camp:

"I honestly don't feel any pressure. We're prepared. We're ready. We have a very stern agenda of what we're going to get done here over the next 17 days. I don't feel any pressure at all and I know our players don't. We don't play that way, I'm not coaching that way, I'm not allowing our coaches to coach that way. We'll play the game the way I was taught to play it and that's to have fun, be physical, enjoy doing it and doing it with one another."
