The Oakland Raiders have signed CB Chance Casey, S Shelton Johnson and LB Marshall McFadden to the active roster from the practice squad, General Manager Reggie McKenzie announced Saturday.
Chance Casey: Casey has been on the Raiders' practice squad since being signed to it Sept. 2. He originally signed as an undrafted free agent with Oakland in May, and was waived at the end of training camp.
During his collegiate career at Baylor, Casey appeared in 43 games (33 starts) over his years, seeing time at both cornerback and safety. He registered 212 tackles, three interceptions, 18 passes defensed, and three forced fumbles.
Shelton Johnson: Johnson has spent the entire season on Oakland's practice squad since being signed to it Sept. 2. He originally signed with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in April, and was waived at the end of training camp.
Johnson was a two-year starter at the University of Wisconsin, seeing action in 46 games (23 starts). Over his career, the 6-foot, 197-pounder totaled 125 tackles (66 solo), four interceptions, one forced fumble and 12 passes defensed. The Carrollton, Texas native was also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2010-12) and 2012 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.
Marshall McFadden: McFadden was signed to the Raiders' practice squad Sept. 2, after being waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of training camp. He originally signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason roster in Jan. 2012. Following being waived on Aug. 31, 2012, he was signed to the Steelers' practice squad, where he spent most of the season. McFadden was signed to Pittsburgh's active roster for the Nov. 18 game vs. Baltimore, seeing action on special teams and recording his first career special teams tackle. He was not on an NFL roster in 2011.
McFadden started 49 games over his collegiate career (2005-10) at South Carolina State, totaling more than 300 tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, three interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. He was named second team All-MEAC in 2008 and received medical redshirts in 2007 and 2009.
In corresponding moves, the Raiders placed LB Kaluka Maiava and S Usama Young on Reserve/Injured and waived DL Brian Sanford.
Usama Young: In his first season with the Silver and Black, Young played in 12 games (1 start at SS) and played a key role on special teams and defense. Young totaled 27 defensive tackles (19 solo), 2.5 sacks (leading the secondary), one interception and two passes defensed. He also added six special teams tackles.
Kaluka Maiava: Also in his first season with Oakland, Maiava appeared in nine games (one start), recording 25 tackles (nine solo). The fifth-year pro also added one special teams tackle while playing a key role on all special teams units.
