After hearing his name called on the NFL Draft stage in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Thursday, running back Ashton Jeanty flew to Las Vegas and arrived Friday morning at Intermountain Health Performance Center as a member of the Silver and Black.
"I'm excited to be here, but yeah, it's been a pretty crazy 24 hours,"Jeanty said with a smile as he spoke to media members in his introductory press conference. "Not much sleep, but just a lot of excitement celebrating with my family. Last night I was pretty much up the whole night just thinking about what a great honor it is to be a Raider."
Jeanty was welcomed team staff including General Manager John Spytek, Head Coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. He also spent time with Raider legends Jim Plunkett, Marcus Allen and Fred Biletnikoff.
Just one year removed from an NFL Draft that saw the first running back taken with the 46th pick, Jeanty (sixth overall) became the highest-drafted player at his position since Saquon Barkley (second in 2018). He's also just the fifth running back to be drafted by the Raiders in the first round since 1970, joining Josh Jacobs (24th in 2019), Darren McFadden (4th in 2008), Napoleon Kaufman (18th in 1995) and Marcus Allen (10th in 1982).
The spotlight on him as a high draft choice is something Jeanty is embracing.
"It's a privilege to be in this space and to be a first-round pick," he said. "That's what I've worked to do, and I'm excited for that. I want that type of pressure on me and that type of expectation, and I'm just ready to go to work and prove why they took a chance on me."
More than just the 4,769 rushing yards and 56 career touchdowns, Jeanty believes he's ready to carry all responsibilities in part thanks to the lessons he learned playing at Boise State.
"Just the hard work, discipline, doing the things that nobody else wants to do," he said of what he'll take from college to the pros. "That's what we did each and every single day there. It's paid off, and it's helped me grow into the young man that I am today."
"I mean, I wouldn't say I'll get 2,600 yards again right off the rip," he added with a laugh. "But definitely to just be a great asset to this team, a great teammate and just help bring wins home each and every week."
That's what Jeanty hopes people see in him as a Raiders – a great player and a great person.
And in his mind, success will come with preparation.
"Just taking my preparation to the next level," he said. "Preparing for what defensive attacks we're going to get, how we're going to attack them as an offense. And I think most importantly, taking care of my body right. Just being available to take 30 carries each and every week and understanding that it's me versus 11. Once the ball snaps, there's 11 guys coming after me. So, just having that mentality that nobody's going to take me down."
The work starts now as he begins to get acclimated to his new home, his new teammates and his new offense. Unlike last year, where he was the focal point of every defensive game plan, Jeanty will be aided by All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, among others.
"That's real exciting to have other guys who can attack defenses down the field, great quarterback and receivers, tight end," Jeanty said. "It's just going to make an all-around great offense."
While the Raiders are still months away from taking the field at Allegiant Stadium, the Silver and Black's first draft pick of the Spytek-Carroll era is already feeling the love.
"I'm super excited," Jeanty said. "I'm already loving this fan base, so I think it's going to be a lot of fun."
With the 6th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders have selected Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
