Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, is nearly impossible to block at the point of attack as a ferocious defensive end with NBA power forward-like athleticism and movement skills. The 6-foot-4, 272-pounder overwhelms edge blockers with his first-step quickness and burst while displaying exceptional "knock-back" power attacking blockers on bull rush maneuvers. With 90.5 career sacks, including 2.0 this season, Garrett is the straw that stirs the drink for a turnover-obsessed defense that wants to create splash plays, utilizing pressure to force quarterbacks into mistakes and errant throws with No. 95 leading the charge.
Know His Name…
Amari Cooper is five-time Pro Bowler with a polished game that continues to test the cover skills of elite defenders. The former Raiders' star enters Week 4 with just 12 catches for 113 yards (9.4 yards per catch) and two touchdowns, but he remains a dangerous playmaker due to his superb route-running skills and playmaking ability. With Deshaun Watson likely looking to his top receiver in key moments, the Raiders must pay close attention to Cooper's whereabouts in "gotta have it" situations.
Don't Sleep On…
Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is an exceptional "see ball, get ball" defender with big play ability. The Pro Bowler's outstanding instincts, awareness and burst enable him to shoot gaps at the line of scrimmage to stop runners in the hole. With 25 total stops and three tackles for loss, the 6-foot-2, 221-pounder is a tackling machine with the potential to tilt the game with a big hit or a timely turnover on a timely blitz between the tackles.
Under Pressure
The pressure is mounting on Deshaun Watson to produce at a high level. The Browns mortgaged the farm to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler, but he has not played at an elite level since moving to the Dawg Pound. Watson completed just 59.3% of his passes, averaged 184.5 pass yards, and compiled a 17:11 touchdown-to-interception ratio in his career with the Browns. Considering his 79.1 passer rating in 15 games with Cleveland, the Browns QB1 will need to step up his play against the Silver and Black to silence the critics dismissing his game.
Matchup To Watch
Grant Delpit vs. Brock Bowers
The Browns love to crowd the middle of the field to force quarterbacks to make low-percentage throws to the sidelines. Delpit could play a vital role in a gameplan that limits Bowers' impact as a top target in the passing game. Though the fourth-year pro has yet to register an interception this season, he could make his mark as the enforcer tasked with neutralizing the rookie pass catcher between the hashes.
Offensive Strategy
New offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey has experimented with various schemes and tactics that have struggled with Deshaun Watson at the helm. Still, the Browns have flashed explosive potential on the perimeter when everyone is on the same page in the passing game. If the Browns can get the running game untracked with Jerome Ford or D'Onta Freeman finding cracks between the tackles, the offense can create problems for the Raiders with a mix of hard-hitting inside runs to set up high-percentage play-passes that help Watson find his groove on the road.
Defensive Strategy
Jim Schwartz always wants to bring five defenders with some form of man coverage behind the pressures. The veteran defensive coordinator will relentlessly attack quarterbacks to force a key turnover at a pivotal moment. With a disruptive frontline featuring several explosive pass rushers and "see ball, get ball" second-level defenders, the Browns' attack-style approach will test the instincts, awareness and communication skills of the Raiders offensive line and quarterback for four quarters.
