Combine Notebook: Shedeur Sanders, Ashton Jeanty talk Raiders, draft process and more

Quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs were the position groups that spoke with the media at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Friday morning, three positions that the Las Vegas Raiders will also be targeting this offseason.

Among the skill players in attendance, several are predicted to be drafted early on Day 1, including Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders and Ashton Jeanty. These three position groups will partake in on-field drills Saturday afternoon.

Here are some key notes from Friday at the Combine.

Colorado's Shedeur Sanders was confident as ever standing before media in Indianapolis.

He's coming off an impressive season coached under his Hall of Fame father Deion Sanders, who transformed the Buffaloes into one of the top teams in the Big 12 in their first year in the conference. They upped their win total by five games from 2023 as Shedeur Sanders led the nation in completion percentage (74%) while also leading the Big 12 in passing yards (4,134) and passing touchdowns (37). As for if the quarterback believes his college success will transfer over, it's a no-brainer.

"We went from Jackson State to Colorado and changed two programs back to back," Sanders told reporters. "You don't think I could come to an NFL franchise and change a program again? It's history, it's always going to repeat itself."

"You think I'm worried about what critics say or what people got to say? You know who my dad is? They hated on him too," he added. "It's almost normal. Without people hating, it's not normal for us. We like the adversity. We like everything that comes with the name. That's why we are who we are."

Along with Sanders, other top quarterbacks that have met with the Raiders during the Combine include Texas' Quinn Ewers, Ohio State's Will Howard and Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. Dart, who led the nation in yards per passing attempt (10.8) in 2024, was teammates with Raiders offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson at Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah.

"I've been really excited to meet with them this week. It was great to sit down with them," Dart said of his meeting with the Raiders. "Coach Carroll and Chip [Kelly] were great. Chip recruited me out of high school so we kind of had a relationship from that early on. But they're an elite staff and I think they're on a great track for a lot of improvement for these upcoming years. Also one of my best friends from high school JPJ ... it's been fun to talk with him and get his experience inside of things but they're a great program."

Several top running backs and wide receivers linked to the Raiders spoke as well, including Heisman finalist Ashton Jeanty, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan and Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka, Quinshon Judkins and Trey Henderson.

Jeanty, who met with the Raiders this week, is regarded as the top running back in the nation after rushing for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Boise State Broncos in 2024. His ability to fight through contact along with breakaway speed would be a welcome addition to any team, especially a Raiders squad that struggled running the ball last season.

"Obviously there's a need for a lot of teams at running back and wherever they feel necessary to draft," Jeanty said. "But I think it's been shown this year by the Eagles and Saquon Barkley that a great running back can help your team out a lot."

"For me, I'm just back there relaxed. That's why I stand back there like that," Jeanty said when describing his play style. "I'm a real physical runner, explosive, real shifty, make guys miss – just versatile."

Egbuka, who caught 205 passes and 24 touchdowns in his four years at Ohio State, expressed gratitude and excitement for his meeting with the Raiders this week. The DuPont, Washington, native grew up as a Seattle Seahawks fan and watched Las Vegas' new head coach rally them to two consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

The Buckeyes have had four wide receivers taken in the first round of the NFL Draft in the last three years. With a impressive Combine showing and Pro Day, Egbuka has a chance to be the next one.

"I love studying the art of receiver, the art of route running," he said. "The cerebral part of it for me is very fun. I think ever since a young age when I first started playing receiver, I was watching wide receiver, DB one-on-ones and just route running. ... I think my game is comprised of all the people who I watched over my entire lifetime."

With free agency set to begin on March 12th, take a look at the Raiders officially slated to become free agents.
