"Nada", fue lo que respondió el entrenador en jefe Antonio Pierce cuando se le preguntó qué sacó de positivo tras el juego inaugural en casa de los Raiders del 2024 donde cayeron 36-22 ante las Panteras de Carolina. Las Vegas se vio abajo en el marcador por dobles dígitos con 28 segundos restantes en la primera mitad y no pudieron acortar distancias de nueva cuenta a una posesión durante el resto del partido.
Andy Dalton fue nombrado el mariscal de campo titular de las Panteras el lunes en lugar de Bryce Young y la decisión del entrenador en jefe Dave Canales acabó siendo la correcta. La defensa aérea de los Malosos, que fue un punto brillante en los primeros dos juegos de la temporada, dejó muchos espacios en el campo y acabó permitiendo 319 yardas por medio de pases de Carolina durante el partido, después de solo haber recibido 144 de Justin Herbert y 247 de Lamar Jackson en el arranque de la campaña.
La ofensiva negro y plata tuvo una serie brillante en su segunda ocasión con el ovoide en el partido, donde a pesar de arrancar encajonados en su yarda 3, lograron recorrer 97 yardas para conseguir su primer y único touchdown de la primera mitad. Gardner Minshew fue el artífice de las dos jugadas que marcaron la diferencia en esta serie: en primera instancia un pase completo de 54 yardas a Tre Tucker y posteriormente un acarreo de 4 yardas en tercera y cuatro cuando estaban en la zona roja, que extendió la serie y puso a Las Vegas en primera y gol desde la yarda dos, de donde Alexander Mattison consiguió un acarreo anotador con el que tiene ahora touchdowns en sus primeros tres juegos con los Raiders, empatando así el juego a 7 en el primer cuarto.
Pero en el segundo parcial el ataque de los Malosos no se metió a territorio enemigo hasta los últimos 20 segundos de la primera mitad, mientras que Carolina con jugadas explosivas (cuatro de al menos 20 yardas, tres de las cuales fueron de más de 30) logró meterse a las diagonales dos ocasiones más e irse al medio tiempo con la ventaja de 21-7. En total las Panteras anotaron 26 puntos sin respuesta después de que los Raiders consiguieron el touchdown de Mattison, Las Vegas no pudo responder hasta que en el último cuarto consiguieron pases anotadores de Gardner Minshew a Jakobi Meyers y de Aidan O'Connell a Tre Tucker para dejar la pizarra final 36 a 22.
"El esquema no fue lo suficientemente bueno, el diseño de las jugadas no fue lo suficientemente bueno hoy", dijo Pierce. "Lo que pensábamos que iba a funcionar no funcionó y en el campo no ejecutamos ni pusimos el esfuerzo que, para mí, pusimos en partidos anteriores".
El ataque de los Raiders sigue sin carburar, con la excepción siendo la segunda mitad en Baltimore. "Tenemos que hacer algo para solucionarlo", aseguró Pierce. "Si se trata de lanzar para abrir el ataque terrestre. El esquema, los jugadores, el coacheo. Lo dije antes, no me voy a sentar aquí y seguir viendo. Simplemente no es lo suficientemente bueno. Promedio de 3.4 yardas (hoy), dos yardas la semana pasada. Eso no somos nosotros. Esa no es nuestra identidad. No es lo que quiero que parezca. Eso no es lo que nuestro equipo va a ser y tenemos que trabajar en eso".
Todo puede suceder un domingo. La semana pasada fue con los Raiders dando la campanada, en esta ellos fueron los que terminaron estando del lado equivocado de una sorpresa. No se es el mejor tras ganar, ni el peor tras perder, sin importar lo dolorosa que sea una derrota. Los Malosos ahora tendrán una semana de preparación para lo que será un duelo entre equipos urgidos por una victoria, ya que recibirán el próximo domingo a los Cafés de Cleveland, quienes tienen marca de una triunfo y dos descalabros al igual que Las Vegas.
