Nancy Roman from Nevada asks:
"How is Gardner Minshew?"
Head Coach Antonio Pierce confirmed Monday that Gardner Minshew II suffered a broken collarbone against the Denver Broncos and will miss the remainder of the season.
While one quarterback gets put on the shelf, another one is close to coming off for the Raiders. Pierce stated Wednesday morning that Aidan O'Connell will start against the Kansas City Chiefs barring any setbacks.
"He carried himself like a starter even when he was IR and he did that when he was a backup," Pierce said. "He's did a great job of just being engaged with the players, engaged on the sideline. No matter in meeting rooms, he's the one speaking up, talking. You can just look at his eyes, you can look at his demeanor. ... He worked his tail off to get back."
O'Connell has appeared in four games this season, totaling 455 passing yards, two touchdowns and a 63.4 completion percentage. He's also one of two quarterbacks to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs since Week 16 of the 2023 season.
"Obviously that was a different team, a different year," O'Connell said of last year's victory in KC. "But Arrowhead is going to be loud and the Chiefs are going to be a good team and they're going to make you earn everything really. You can, to a certain extent, lean on what you've been through but I think it's definitely a new year and a new challenge."
Toni Michelle Smith from Illinois asks:
"Last Christmas, the Raiders gifted NFL fans with a brilliant defensive performance against the Chiefs. This Friday is a different holiday, but will the mission be the same?"
A huge factor behind the Raiders pulling off the Christmas Day victory was their ability to create turnovers.
While only allowing 14 points to the Chiefs offense, the defense came away with 13 points of their own off a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown and Jack Jones interception returned for a touchdown. Patrick Mahomes was also sacked four times.
"Nobody's living in the past, but there's familiarity in terms of scheme," defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said. "This is my third season and this is my sixth time going against the Chiefs as a coordinator. I did it one time with the Giants. So, we're always going back for a frame of reference from older games. That's what we do as coaches, but in terms of the guys, they are just working on this week and I'm sure we'll sprinkle in tape here and there from last year. But you know, it's so week-to-week in terms of how teams change. Some of the pieces are the same, but the team changes and how they attack you."
The Raiders have a 2-1 record this season in games in which they didn't lose the turnover margin.
