Raiders fail to capitalize on momentum for a second straight game

The Las Vegas Raiders were hit with a bad case of déjà vu in their Week 6 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It was the second straight week that the Raiders got off to a fast start in the first half and then lost grasp of the momentum down the stretch due to penalties and turnovers. Over the last two contests, they've turned the ball over to the opposing defense six times – three in each game.

While the Raiders committed three less penalties than the Steelers, two of them proved costly, wiping out a touchdown pass from Aidan O'Connell to Alexander Mattison as well as an interception by Divine Deablo.

"It just seemed similar to last week unfortunately," Maxx Crosby said after the 32-13 defeat. "Just not playing good enough complementary football, not playing good enough in general, period."

While the Raiders won't make any excuses for it, they came into the game down several key starters including Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Christian Wilkins and Zamir White to name a few. The margin of error for the Raiders was already slim, especially going against a top-ranked Steelers defense that has now allowed less than 20 points to four of their six opponents this season.

"It starts with discipline," said Head Coach Antonio Pierce. "We had four penalties but they were at critical moments. The turnover thing is embarrassing. We don't respect the ball enough so we don't even deserve a chance to put ourselves in a position to win. Details, obviously adjustments as the game goes on. We talked about the first drive, hell of a job there, then what does that lead up to?"

Alexander Mattison accounted for the team's touchdown on the opening drive, with 44 total scrimmage yards on his way to the end zone. The veteran running back echoed the sentiment of his head coach, with the team's loss pointing back to the lack of discipline.

"On that first drive we were able to get stuff clicking and stuff going, but it's just the turnovers," said Mattison. "When you can eliminate the turnovers, we put ourselves in a good position to score, put ourselves in good positions and stay on the field. And I think we just got to make sure we try to execute that middle eight.

"We came out strong, but we just got to keep that momentum and I don't think that we did a good job of holding onto that momentum after that first drive."

The only thing the Raiders can do now is put their last two losses behind them and focus on the next task at hand – the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium next Sunday.

"We've just got to go back and get to work," said Pierce. "It's very cliché, but it's true. ... Our record is what it shows, we're 2-4. It's not good enough. We're not coaching well enough, we're not playing well enough, and we're not detailing well enough."
