Draft Day 3 Recap: Raiders select largest draft class since 2007

The Raiders rounded out their 2025 draft class with six selections on Saturday as the draft came to a close.

Six new faces

After trading back twice on Friday, the Raiders stayed put with their six picks on Saturday, adding three offensive players and three on defense to cap off the draft class. WR Dont'e Thornton Jr. was the first pick of the day, followed by DT Tonka Hemingway, DT JJ Pegues, QB Tommy Mellott, QB Cam Miller and LB Cody Lindenberg.

"The competitiveness of this group is pretty unique," Raiders director of college scouting Brandon Yeargan said post-draft. "The competitiveness, toughness stands out to me, especially with some of these late-round guys that we added."

This is the Raiders' largest draft class since 2007, when the team also selected 11 total players. General Manager John Spytek couldn't be more pleased with not only how the class came together, but of how his team worked together to solidify the new group of Raiders.

"I felt like the strategy that we approached it with, the manner in which we accomplished it was really solid," Spytek said of his first draft as general manager. "Now we'll just see. There's 32 teams, like i said the other day, that all feel good about it. I'm happy with the way it went because of the teamwork that we had, the people that worked hard, the unselfishness of the group. Just what everyone took to make the Raiders better, that's what the room was about and I felt like we did that."

Back-to-back QBs

In Round 6 with the No. 213 and 215 picks, the Raiders selected two FCS quarterbacks: Tommy Mellott out of Montana State and Cam Miller out of North Dakota State.

Mellott and Miller faced each other this past January in the FCS Championship Game. Ultimately, Miller and the Bison came out victorious over Montana State, though it was a close 35-32 final score.

"Cam probably enjoyed that last game a little more than Tommy," Yeargan joked post-draft.

Many analysts have compared Mellott to former Patriot Julian Edelman, who transitioned to receiver after three years as quarterback at Kent State. Another blueprint for how the Raiders could use Mellott is the Saints' Taysom Hill, an all-around utility player for New Orleans who appeared in eight games at tight end, running back, quarterback and receiver in 2024.

"I wouldn't pigeonhole him right now," Yeargan said. "We view him as a receiver that's going to have a lot of value in the kicking game potentially as a returner, as a cover player. Maybe he plays some quarterback too. We're looking at him really as an athlete/receiver. He's a unique guy."

What's next?

With all seven rounds of the draft wrapped up, scouts from all 32 teams will start calling undrafted players to add more pieces to the roster. Those UDFA signings will likely be announced anytime between now and the coming few days.

Within the next couple of weeks, the Raiders will host a rookie mini-camp (dates are yet to be announced) where the draft picks and undrafted players will come together at HQ to begin learning the NFL ropes, as well as practice for the first time in the Silver and Black and have meet with the coaching staff.
