Player Profile: Get to know dual-threat quarterback Tommy Mellott

Read through for background on Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott, who could find himself doing a variety of things for the Las Vegas Raiders.

Big Sky phenomenon

Tommy Mellott seems to be one of the more impressive athletes to come out of the state of Montana.

He was named Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Montana after totaling 2,940 yards and 30 touchdowns in the air with 1,217 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground in high school. He decided to stay in-state and commit to Montana State, where he became one of the most electrifying quarterbacks at the FCS level.

In his collegiate career, he recorded 78 total touchdowns which includes passing, rushing and receiving. The previous season, he won the Walter Payton Award given annually to the top offensive player in FCS football. He was also the first player in the program's history to receive this honor.

Winning traditions

As the starting quarterback for the Bobcats, Mellott stacked up 33 quarterback wins, the second most in school history. He also led them to two FCS National Championship games, their first time competing in a title game since 1984. His Bobcats fell short each time to North Dakota State and Cam Miller, who ironically, the Raiders drafted after Mellott.

"He's shifty and fast, which could foreshadow a successful transition if he can prove himself as a route-runner and pass-catcher," Lance Zierlein, NFL.com analyst, wrote of Mellott. "Mellott's impressive pro-day numbers and competitiveness could earn him an opportunity from a team looking for a player who could follow in the footsteps of Julian Edelman, who made the same position transition 16 years ago."

Positionless

Despite playing quarterback in college, he participated in wide receiver drills at his pro day.

His pro day showing rose his draft stock, as he clocked in a 4.39 in the 40-yard dash plus a 41-inch vertical jump. If Mellott had participated in the NFL Combine, it would've been the best marks by any quarterback in attendance. He also put up 19 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press, which would've tied for second among receivers at the Combine.

"I wouldn't pigeon hold him right now," said Brandon Yeargan, Raiders director of college scouting. "I would say we view him as a receiver that's going to have a lot of value in the kicking game potentially as a returner, as a cover player, maybe he plays some quarterback too. ... He's a unique guy. His testing numbers were through the roof."

With the 213th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders have selected Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott.
