Raiders Short-Circuit Chargers 27-17

The Raiders won the toss and deferred. After RB Danny Woodhead returned the opening kickoff and two plays resulted in two yards, safety Usama Young picked off a QB Philip Rivers deep pass. QB Terrelle Pryor then went deep and hit WR Rod Streater for a 44-yard touchdown strike. The extra point was good and the Raiders took a 7-0 lead with 13:03 left in the 1st quarter. 

Woodhead returned the ensuing kickoff to the 23. The Raiders defense allowed a couple of first downs before forcing a punt. The Raiders started at the 12 after a CB Phillip Adams fair catch. 

Pryor led a 13-play, 88-yard drive that he capped with a 2-yard TD pass to WR Denarius Moore. K Sebastian Janikowski extra point was good and the Raiders led 14-0 with 1:28 to play in the first quarter. 

Woodhead fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20. The Chargers drove to the Raiders 1-yard line before facing 4th and goal. The Raiders stopped Woodhead short of the goal line and took over on downs at the 1. 

The Raiders moved out to the 27 before the Chargers forced a punt. WR Eddie Royal fumbled the 50-yard P Marquette King punt and the Raiders recovered in Chargers territory. A penalty on the Raiders put the ball on the San Diego 38. 

The Raiders were forced to settle for a Janikowski field goal attempt. The 47-yard kick was true and the Raiders led 17-0 with 4:13 left in the 2nd quarter. 

Janikowski's ensuing kickoff flew out of the back of the end zone for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20. DE Lamarr Houston's 3rd down sack brought out the punting unit with 1:58 left in the 2nd quarter. 

The Raiders were unable to mount a scoring drive and King's punt went for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20 with 41 seconds left in the 2nd quarter. WR Jacoby Ford returned the opening kickoff of the second half to the Raiders 29 and Pryor immediately hit Moore down the right sideline for a 35-yard gain.  The drive fizzled and King came on to punt. King's 34-yard punt was downed at the San Diego 9-yard line.

The Raiders appeared to end the Chargers scoring threat when CB Tracy Porter blocked a Novak field goal attempt but the Chargers recovered and advanced the ball to the Raiders 14 for a first down. The Chargers still had to settle for a Novak 35-ayrd FG, which cut the Raiders lead to 17-3 with 4:51 left in the 3rd quarter.

Ford returned the ensuing kickoff 24 yards to the Raiders 19.  The Chargers forced a three-and-out and took over at their own 30 after a punt and a fair catch. FS Charles Woodson scooped up a Woodhead fumbles and scampered for the 13th defensive TD of his career tying an NFL record. The play was reviewed and the call was upheld. The extra point was good and the Raiders took a 24-3 lead with 2:37 left in the 3rd quarter.

Woodhead fielded the ensuing kickoff and took a knee for a touchback. The Chargers marched right down the field and scored on a 5-yard pass from Rivers to Woodhead. The extra point was good and Raiders lead was cut to to 24-10 with 14:57 left to play.

Ford returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 16. The Raiders went three-and-out and WR Keenan Allen returned King's 64-yard punt to the San Diego 45. Allen capped the drive with a 7-yard TD reception. The extra point was good and the Raiders lead was cut to 24-17 with 10:17 left to play.

Ford returned the ensuing kickoff to the Oakland 20. Janikowski capped the drive with a 50-yard field goal and the Raiders led 27-17 with 4:24 left in the game.

Woodhead fielded the ensuing kickoff in the end zone for a touchback and the Chargers started at the 20. The Chargers drove deep into Raiders territory but rookie CB DJ Hayden's first career interception (in the end zone) turned the Chargers away. The Raiders started at the 20 with 1:48 to play.

The Raiders went three and out and King came on to punt. King's 53-yard punt rolled out of bounds at the Chargers 25 with 1:16 left in the game. Two plays later, Woodson picked off a Rivers pass. Pryor kneeled down twice and the Raiders claimed a 27-17 victory.

The Raiders improve to 2-3 on the season and head to Kansas City next week to take on the 5-0 Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
