The Las Vegas Raiders relieved Antonio Pierce of his duties Tuesday and will begin a search for their next head coach.
Several candidates have reportedly been requested for interviews – a mixture of veteran coaches with prior head coaching experience and coordinators vying for their first opportunity leading an NFL franchise.
Raiders.com takes a look at a few of the top candidates in this cycle, as identified by NFL Research.
Ben Johnson – Detroit Lions offensive coordinator
Ben Johnson seems to be the hot option around the league in this coaching search cycle, and is reportedly preparing to interview with the Raiders this Friday.
Johnson and the Detroit Lions secured their second straight NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the conference heading into the playoffs. A former quarterback at the University of North Carolina, Johnson joined the Lions in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach, working his way up to becoming offensive coordinator in 2022. This season, Detroit's offense led the NFL in scoring offense with 33.2 ppg – the most points per game in a season in franchise history. His offense also set a franchise record for total net yards (6,962) in a single-season.
Five players from Johnson's offense were selected to the NFC's roster for the 2025 Pro Bowl Games, the most of any team in the conference. The 38-year-old is reportedly also in consideration for several other head coaching vacancies, including the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars.
Aaron Glenn - Detroit Lions defensive coordinator
Aaron Glenn has done a little bit of everything in the NFL, making him a viable option for any team.
The former cornerback was a three-time Pro Bowl selection with the New York Jets and Houston Texans, and after his playing career, became a scout for the Jets in 2012. Two seasons later, he made the transition to coaching, getting his feet wet as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Cleveland Browns. He was named the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 2021 and has helped produce a top unit in the league. The 15-win Lions led the league with a +222 point diff. in the 2024 season (more than 60 points better than second) while allowing the second-lowest completion percentage (61.1) and lowest passer rating (82.0) to opposing quarterbacks.
Like Johnson, Glenn is reportedly set to interview with the Raiders on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Pete Carroll - Seattle Seahawks advisor
Pete Carroll has proven throughout his years of coaching experience to be a bonafide winner.
Before moving into a advisor role for the Seattle Seahawks, he was their head coach for 14 seasons. In that span, he won nearly 61 percent of his regular season games with 10 playoff wins, five NFC West titles, two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl XLVIII victory. He was also named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team alongside Bill Belichick.
He's set to interview with the Raiders next week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Steve Spagnuolo – Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator
This coach in particular is assuredly familiar with the Silver and Black having faced them twice a year since 2019.
In Spagnuolo's tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs, they've won six straight AFC West titles, four AFC Championships and three Super Bowl trophies. The Chiefs defensive coordinator also boasts another Super Bowl victory on his résumé, which he won with the New York Giants in the 2007 NFL season.
His Chiefs unit was the fourth-highest scoring defense (19.2 PPG) in the NFL in 2024 and has allowed the fewest points per game (18.2) and second-fewest total yards per game (305.2) since 2023.
Spagnuolo also has NFL head coaching experience from three seasons with the St. Louis Rams (2009-11) and as the Giants interim head coach in 2017. It's been reported that the Raiders requested to interview him.
