Each week throughout camp, Raiders.com will be checking in with rookie running back Dylan Laube for a first person viewpoint of his first NFL training camp (as told to Levi Edwards).
August 10, 2024.
When I woke up that morning, the nerves started to kick in. The butterflies were in full effect and it was that first real feeling of, "Hey, it's gameday now."
It was a different feeling though. This was first my first NFL game. The stakes were a little bit higher.
I went downstairs to the meal room in our hotel. To be honest, it was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. The hotel itself and our setup in Minnesota was unbelievable. I got a smoothie and an omelette, it was perfect. Then we had a couple of walkthroughs and meetings, just your typical gameday stuff. Going through all the simple things, making sure I knew every detail possible.
When we got to the stadium, that's when everything truly hit me.
Right off the bus, I stepped onto the field before warm-ups and it was just an unbelievable feeling. It was just crazy thinking about where I began in my football career then flashing to right there at that moment – it was such a surreal thing for me.
When the game actually started, it was the coolest thing. Of course, the stadium wasn't packed out since it was a preseason game, but it was still loud as hell. It was one of the loudest stadiums I've ever been in.
My first play was on kickoff, I ran down and I actually made the tackle.
I went back in the game to start the third quarter and played running back and gunner in the second half. If you ask any football player, that first hit is when it all settles in. You don't know what to expect until that first play. I got a pretty good gain and then my mind went, "Alright, here we go." This is just another day at the office.
The running back group, especially being a veteran group with Ameer Abdullah, Alex Mattison, Zamir White, Sincere McCormick and Brittain Brown – they're all just super cool guys and helped put me at ease going into the game. They were helpful, talking to me throughout the whole game and going through each play with me. They were really the ones that calmed me down. They just said, "Hey, embrace the moment."
Now stepping into Allegiant Stadium for our open practice, it's by far the best stadium I've been in. The fans were rocking, and that was just for a practice. It felt like a game atmosphere.
For my first game there this Saturday, I'm fired up. I'm even more excited because my family is coming in from Westhampton, New York.
I have a feeling it's going to be electric.
