Recently, Oakland Raiders LB and special teams ace Jon Alston attended the Wender Weis Foundation for Children's Holiday Heroes event in San Francisco as a Celebrity Chairperson.
According to their website, the Wender Weis Foundation for Children's mission statement is:
"Encouragement is unique in that it generates its own power. Creating energy and a sense of power, encouragement grows confidence and plants the seeds of self-esteem in children. When children flourish in the knowledge of their own achievements and potential, they develop the emotional tools and social skills that allow them to lead healthy, powerful and motivated lives. Wender Weis Foundation for Children (WWFC) is committed to encouraging at-risk, disadvantaged children throughout the San Francisco Bay and Chicagoland Areas."
In recent years, other Raiders players such as Nnamdi Asomugha and Justin Fargas have served as Celebrity Chairpersons and Celebrity Heroes respectively.
This was the 13th year for the "Heroes" event and it took place at a venue at the Presidio.
The goal for the night was to create an enchanting holiday wonderland for kids of all ages. The Wender Weis Foundation for Children sponsored 200 children and their families to be able to attend the event.
Attendees of the event were able to participate and enjoy various activities throughout the night such as face painting, holiday cookie decorating, teddy bear stuffing, and photo and autograph opportunities will local celebrity athletes and media.
Proceeds from the event went to local youth programs. To find out more about the event and The Wender Weis Foundation for Children visit http://www.wenderweis.org/.
