In what was a promising start for the Las Vegas Raiders, things eventually took an unfortunate nosedive.
The Raiders offense went 70 yards down the field in 10 plays on their first drive of the game in response to a 52-yard field goal from the Steelers. Aidan O'Connell went 4-of-4 on the drive for 45 yards with Alexander Mattison punching it in for the touchdown to make it 7-3.
Following the Mattison touchdown, the Steelers scored 26 consecutive points.
Like last week's defeat to the Denver Broncos, turnovers and penalties dismantled the Silver and Black. Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt forced two fumbles along with an interception thrown in the fourth quarter to Donte Jackson. The Raiders also committed four penalties, with one overturning an interception by Divine Deablo in the red zone. Additionally, an ineligible man downfield penalty on Jackson Powers-Johnson nullified a Mattison touchdown grab.
Third-down efficiency also played a role in the loss, with the Raiders going 2-of-11 on the money down.
The bright spots for the Raiders included another impressive showing for rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who recorded game-highs in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (71 yards). Mattison also accounted for 65 total scrimmage yards, including his touchdown rush on the opening drive. Kristian Wilkerson also got in the end zone for the first time since the 2021 season with a nine yard reception, and O'Connell's lone touchdown pass of the game.
The Raiders now prepare to make a trip over to SoFi Stadium to face the Los Angeles Rams next Sunday.
