In a game that went down to the wire, the Las Vegas Raiders snapped their 10-game losing streak with a 19-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The first quarter of action was stagnant, with the Raiders' most explosive play being their first – a screen pass to Brock Bowers going for 32 yards. However, the Jaguars defensive front provided issues for Aidan O'Connell in the pocket as they sacked him twice in the first 15 minutes.
Jacksonville got on the scoreboard first with a 26-yard punt return and unnecessary roughness penalty on the Raiders setting them up in prime position at the 29-yard line. The drive was capped off with a one-yard touchdown rush up the middle from Tank Bigsby.
The Raiders offense got clicking in the second quarter off a 13-yard scramble from O'Connell and a 29-yard dot to Tre Tucker . A rush up the middle from Alexander Mattison – the running back's first rushing touchdown since Week 6 – tied the game at seven.
On the Silver and Black's next drive, Daniel Carlson nailed a 49-yard field goal to give the team a 10-7 lead with 10:28 left in the second quarter. After another defensive stop on the Jaguars, Ameer Abdullah would account for 24 scrimmage yards on the offense's third straight drive to end with a score – with Carlson making a 37-yard field goal to make it 13-7.
This was the first time the Raiders held a lead going into halftime since Week 12 against the Denver Broncos.
The defense continued to ride the momentum of the offense, securing two fumble recoveries down the stretch in the first half. Safety Isaiah Pola-Mao forced both fumbles, ripping the ball out from Bigsby and tight end Brenton Strange. Safeties Tre’von Moehrig and rookie Thomas Harper recovered the fumbles, respectively, making it seven turnovers for the Raiders defense in their last three games.
With 2:22 left in the third quarter, Carlson had the opportunity to extend the lead but missed from 46 yards out. It was his first field goal missed from under 50 yards since Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Three plays later, Mac Jones found rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. deep for a 62-yard touchdown. The score gave Jacksonville a 14-13 lead as the clock wound down to the fourth quarter.
The Raiders offense wasted no time retaking the lead though. O'Connell went 5-of-8 for 52 passing yards on the following drive, with Ameer Abdullah scoring on a seven-yard touchdown rush, making this the team's first game since Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns with multiple rushing touchdowns.
After a failed two-point conversion, Las Vegas took a 19-14 lead they would not relinquish.
With 2:44 left in regulation, the Jaguars had one last attempt to score a touchdown to potentially win the game. However, the Raiders defense pulled out one last stop with a Moehrig tackle on fourth down with :55 seconds left.
This victory takes the Silver and Black to 3-12 for the season with an opportunity to stack wins when taking on the New Orleans Saints on the road next Sunday.
