The Las Vegas Raiders were a play or two away from pulling off another holiday upset against the Kansas City Chiefs, but ultimately fell short, 19-17, in the NFL's second ever Black Friday game.
The Raiders were plagued by penalties in all three phases of the game in the first half, committing six for 55 yards in the first two quarters.
Regardless, the defense's playmaking in a few key moments limited the Chiefs offense. Jack Jones notched a pass defensed on DeAndre Hopkins forcing Kansas City to settle for a 25-yard field goal on their first drive. Two possessions later, K'Lavon Chaisson sacked Patrick Mahomes on third down.
The Raiders offense put themselves in scoring territory on two drives in the first half, but couldn't reach the end zone. A few dimes from Aidan O'Connell to Jakobi Meyers set up Daniel Carlson in perfect position for a 27-yard field goal to tie the game at three.
However on their following possession, Carlson was unable to make a 56-yard field goal – with the Chiefs then capitalizing for a six-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Justin Watson. The score gave Kansas City a 10-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Silver and Black's inability to end drives with scores continued at the start of the second half. After driving down the field to the Kansas City 31-yard line, Ameer Abdullah was stuffed at fourth-and-one for a loss on downs. The Chiefs responded with another field goal from Matthew Wright to make it 13-3.
The following drive came to an end for the Raiders with another uncharacteristic missed field goal attempt from 50+ yards, giving the ball back to the Kansas City for Wright to make his third field goal of the game and give the Chiefs a two-possession lead.
Fortunately for the Raiders, Abdullah then shifted the momentum in his team's direction. The 31-year-old running back reversed field for a 69-yard kickoff return that sparked the offense. Three plays later, O'Connell found Brock Bowers 33 yards down the field for the Silver and Black's first touchdown of the day, cutting the lead down to six points heading into the fourth quarter.
Bowers finished the game with 10 catches for a career-high 140 receiving yards and the touchdown.
After forcing a three-and-out, O'Connell stayed on course with making explosive plays. The second-year quarterback found Tre Tucker streaking deep down the field for 58 yards at the top of the fourth quarter to take the lead, 17-16. It was the second-year receiver's longest reception of his career.
As the clock ran down, special teams continued to play a crucial role in the results. The Chiefs churned out an 11-play drive capped off by a 32-yard field goal. In response, the Raiders offense stalled out with Carlson missing a 58-yarder before the two-minute warning.
On the Raiders' final possession of the game, O'Connell got back to work. He went 5-of-5 for 55 yards down the field.
However, on the final play of the game, a miscommunication on the snap resulted in a fumble recovered by the Chiefs with 14 seconds left in regulation that sealed the AFC West rival's win.
