Training Camp Notebook 8/2: Rookies Tommy Eichenberg, Dylan Laube stacking up good days at camp

Notes and Observations from Day 7 of practice

Offense

  • Gardner Minshew II and Aidan O'Connell both looked efficient Friday as they exchanged reps throughout practice. During team period, O'Connell threw a nice pass that resulted in a Brock Bowers touchdown grab. On the next drive, Minshew was able to do the same, connecting with UDFA Ramel Keyton in paydirt.
  • The catch of the day came from DJ Turner when O'Connell hit him on a go-route down the sideline for a big gain, making the contested catch.
  • With two defenders trailing Tre Tucker during 7-on-7s, Tucker made a highlight grab and got both feet down for the touchdown from O'Connell.
  • Alexander Mattison and Dylan Laube seem to have a knack for getting the ball in open space and making plays. Both are carving roles for themselves as running backs on passing downs.

Defense

  • Adam Butler is continuing to make the most out of his reps and has every intention of winning the starting job next to Christian Wilkins in the interior line. While he's known for being a formidable pass rusher, accumulating five sacks in 2023, he's been putting an emphasis throughout camp on stopping the run. "I want to be more of an early down player as well and just change the narrative about myself throughout the league," Butler said. "Show that I can play the run and I can rush the passer at the same time."
  • Rookie linebacker Tommy Eichenberg had another successful day. He brings an aggression to his position that's fun to watch. "Tommy is interesting," Antonio Pierce said. "He didn't run a 40 [-yard dash], people questioned his speed but the one thing you can't question is his toughness, his anticipation, his patience, his feel for the game, the natural ability to move like a linebacker. He sees the game well."

Special Teams

  • Daniel Carlson knocked down every field goal that came his way, to no surprise. He also came through with some nice plays on kickoff with the ball bouncing inside the landing zone, giving the kick coverage team more than enough time to get down the field to the returner.
  • Laube brought the juice out of special teams coordinator Tom McMahon as the running back made a few defenders miss on a kickoff return to the house. McMahon ran out on the field and celebrated the play as the team is still in the process of learning the new hybrid kickoff rule. "He's definitely been one of the coaches that's helped me a bunch. He's the man," Laube said of the special teams coordinator. "He preaches to stay vertical and just be super fast."

Quote of the Day

I don't deserve anything. I have to show up every single day and work every single day and give them a reason to put me in the game. Byron Young
