Training Camp Notebook 8/3: Top standouts from Raiders' Saturday scrimmage

The Las Vegas Raiders took Saturday's practice to get the best out of one another.

In Costa Mesa, California, the Silver and Black started practice in the evening and ran a live scrimmage between offense and defense.

A few of the usual suspects stood out among the rest and made plays for their unit. Here's a rundown of those standouts throughout the scrimmage.

Maxx Crosby

Maxx Crosby was on a mission to wreck practice, and like usual, he succeeded.

On the second play of the live scrimmage, he beat Thayer Munford Jr. off the line of scrimmage to take down Gardner Minshew II.The sack set the tone for the rest of the defense as he made the quarterback's life extremely difficult with each snap.

Not only did Crosby make plays rushing the passer, but also in the run game with a few stops on running back Zamir White. How he played against the run alongside Christian Wilkins gave glimpses of how dominant of a tandem they can be.

"Maxx is going to be talking, I've been dealing with that for almost six years now so it's nothing different," joked Andre James. "He's always been the same Maxx but it's fun. It's making Thayer better, it's making DJ [Glaze] better, it's making everyone better."

Gardner Minshew II

After Gardner Minshew II was sacked by Crosby, he picked himself up, dusted himself off and proceeded to have arguably his best practice in camp to date.

On three different possessions, he led either the first or second-team offense down the field to the goal line. On one drive, he connected with White and Brock Bowers for medium gains and ripped off a long run to the 1-yard line to escape what would've been another sack from Crosby.

His other two drives resulted in touchdown passes to wide receiver DJ Turner and tight end Harrison Bryant.

Jack Jones

Cornerback Jack Jones has had a "the more you can do" mentality in training camp, putting his best foot forward on defense and special teams.

During Saturday's special team periods, he delivered on his kick and punt returns. With speed and shifty moves, he made the gunner miss tackles on several occasions for big returns.

As for his defensive play, he came up with the second of three interceptions on the day for his unit as a pass went through a receiver's hands with Jones in perfect position to make the play.

"I'm just glad that we keep stacking back-to-back days with Jack," Head Coach Antonio Pierce said Friday. "Everything I talk [about] with Jack is about being consistent, being a pro, being on time, being where you're supposed to be, talking, communicating, being accountable, making it to where everybody can trust and love you. You know, Jack's a special player. He's been a special player since I've known him. And when Jack is in a good place, the Raiders are in a good place."

Isaiah Pola-Mao

Wherever the ball went, Isaiah Pola-Mao made sure he was there, too.

While Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps have established themselves as the lead safeties, Pola-Mao is right there with them and continues to show his upside as a young player. Pola-Mao secured an interception, running over on help defense in the end zone and picking off the ball. He also showed sideline to sideline speed as he made tackles in the middle of the field and was seemingly in the right spots to make plays.

"At the end of the day, you've got to be able to run all day," Pola-Mao said. "Just always being around the ball is something that I've put on myself. At the end of the day when you put on the film, I want to be in the TV frame."
