Training Camp Notebook 8/5: Rushing attack, offensive line 'finishing down the field'

Notes and Observations from Day 9 of Practice

Offense

  • Zamir White came back to practice energized after the team had a day off from practice. He was ripping through gaps at full speed thanks in part to interior linemen Cody Whitehair and Dylan Parham leading the way. "I like the little nastiness that we're starting to build among our offensive line and that group," Antonio Pierce said. "Just finishing down the field, finishing blocks and putting guys on the ground – truly finishing them."
  • Monday was a good day for the tight end room. The trio of Michael Mayer, Harrison Bryant and first-round pick Brock Bowers all caught passes in 1-on-1 drills and made the most of the opportunities in team period by catching multiple throws from Gardner Minshew II, Aidan O'Connell and Anthony Brown Jr.
  • Before the start of practice, Pierce mentioned how pleased he's been with UDFA receiver Ramel Keyton, prompting the head coach to give the former Tennessee Volunteer some more reps. After an exceptional showing with five catches in the live scrimmage Saturday, Keyton capitalized on another good day of practice with a touchdown on a deep post route in team period.
  • Rookie tackle DJ Glaze continued to hold his own against some of the best the defensive line has to offer, earning first-team reps throughout certain portions of practice.

Defense

  • Maxx Crosby gave off some déjà vu during team period, getting what would've been a sack on Minshew. He also sacked Minshew on the second play of the live scrimmage Saturday.
  • Jakorian Bennett almost added another interception to his training camp collection, perfectly jumping a route to make a play. However, the cornerback bobbled the ball and had to settle for the pass breakup. While the play didn't end the way he'd hoped, it still showed an impressive instinctual nature on his part.

Special Teams

  • Antonio Pierce gave high praise to DJ Turner and his contributions on special teams. "I think DJ has put himself in a good position," Pierce said. "He's one of the best special teams players on our team and in the National Football League. Very productive as a gunner, very active."
  • Wide receiver Tre Tucker saw the majority of reps as a kick returner Monday, with the expectation he'll see some reps there during Saturday's preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Quote of the day

Just have an aggressive mindset on every rep. ... Attack the defense. Good things will happen when you're aggressive. Kristian Wilkerson
