Training Camp Notebook 7/31: The offense is picking up the pace

Notes and Observations from Day 6 of practice

Offense

  • Wednesday's practice was the most in sync the Raiders offense has looked so far in camp in my eyes. After the first few days of installing Getsy's scheme, it seems they're getting more comfortable.
  • Davante Adams saw a good volume of targets to no surprise. The star receiver made an incredible play on the right sideline, grabbing the ball over two defenders and getting both feet down. He also made another great catch in one-on-ones on a back shoulder throw from Gardner Minshew II.
  • Minshew started team period off with the first string after Aidan O'Connell took first-team reps yesterday. Minshew showcased short and mid accuracy throughout the day. Meanwhile, O'Connell finished practice on a high note connecting with Tre Tucker and DJ Turner on touchdown passes in red zone drills.
  • Veteran running back Ameer Abdullah gave high praise to rookies Brock Bowers, Dylan Laube and DJ Glaze for making plays over the last few days against the starting defense. "Brock Bowers, he shows up every day and does all the little things," Abdullah said. "Dylan Laube, he's bringing a spark every time he gets the ball. He's a very special guy. I think DJ Glaze as well, he really comes off the ball and that's really emphasized on offense. ... Everything starts up front and he's a guy that brings that same attention to detail every day."

Defense

  • The play of the practice in team period came from of course, Maxx Crosby. After a pass completion from O'Connell to Abdullah to gain a first-down, Antonio Pierce urged the defense to pick the intensity. Two plays later, Crosby hit a speed rush off the edge to tip the ball in throwing motion for what would've been a strip sack.
  • Rookie linebacker Tommy Eichenberg made a couple of plays as well, including a few tackles for loss and a near one-handed interception as he dropped back into coverage. "Tommy is a silent killer, man," Pierce said. "Tommy has slowly each and every day gotten better and better – and I'm going back to OTAs and minicamp. He's come right into training camp and picked it right up. I mean, he's put himself in position to be a backup or now a guy to get some playing time for us."
  • Second-year defensive tackle Byron Young has seen an uptick in reps, looking stout against the run. He's putting himself in place to fight for a role in the interior line rotation with Christian Wilkins, Adam Butler and John Jenkins. "I think him having success with Jenks [John Jenkins] not getting as many reps right now and making some plays, that's just confidence," Pierce said about Young. "But he has to build on that each and every day."
  • Nate Hobbs had the receivers on lockdown during one-on-one drills, forcing multiple incompletions. He also made a few plays on the ball in team period, switching between nickel and outside cornerback.

Special Teams

  • AJ Cole and Daniel Carlson both took turns kicking line drives on kick and punt return, trying to figure out new ways to limit returners in the new kickoff rule.
  • Tyreik McAllister had some opportunities fielding kicks and Laube continued to show his speed as he turned a few balls upfield for solid gains.
