Training Camp Notebook 7/29: Maxx Crosby, Nate Hobbs have a field day

Notes and Observations from Day 4 of practice

Offense

  • Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew II have traded off getting first-team reps, and Minshew was first at bat under center Monday. During team period, he used his feet to rush for a few first downs.
  • The tight end trio of Michael Mayer, Brock Bowers and Harrison Bryant continued to move all over the field in Luke Getsy's offense. As the team is currently installing the offense, the tight ends are constantly doing pre-snap motions that keep the defense honest. "The whole group has been awesome," Getsy said. "We stress and put a lot of pressure on them with how much stuff they have to know. They have to be a tight end, they have to be a receiver, they have to be a tackle, they have to be a running back. They have to do a lot."
  • While Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers and Tre Tucker are expected to be big pieces in the vertical game, there are still questions around the remaining wide receivers to make the 53-man roster. Alex Bachman continued to set himself apart, making several catches for big gains. Competing for reps with Bachman, Kristian Wilkerson and Keelan Doss have seen a lot of targets. "That's going to be a really cool competition because you guys have seen that there's guys that've been making plays," Getsy said. "There's been sprinkles of guys here and there, and I'm really excited."
  • Rookie Dylan Laube has earned more reps throughout camp as he showcases his ability to run downhill and catch out the backfield. He's received rave reviews throughout camp from the coaching staff. "He's off to a great start," Getsy said. "The game comes natural to him. He has a great feel for it. The decisions he has to make, they come to him naturally. As far as responsibility wise, he doesn't have the errors, so that's really cool to see from such a young guy."

Defense

  • Nate Hobbs had an impressive showing in the secondary right before pads come on tomorrow. The cornerback played on the outside and at nickel throughout the day, making several plays on the ball in team period and 7-on-7 drills. "Anytime I get to go out there and be physical and be me, I'm going to take that chance," Hobbs said.
  • The defensive line also got after it, and its was no surprise that Maxx Crosby was leading the way for the unit. He wreaked havoc (as much as he could without pads) coming off the edge with an array of speed rushes and swim moves. He got what would've been three sacks on both Minshew and O'Connell during practice.
  • The one interception of the day came from rookie safety Trey Taylor during 7-on-7 drills. Quarterback Anthony Brown Jr. put the ball right on the money for his receiver, but the ball bobbled out of his hands. Taylor was step-for-step with his intended man and snagged the ball out of mid-air. The 2023 Jim Thorpe Award winner secured three interceptions in his last season at the Air Force Academy.

Special Teams

  • The majority of kick and punt returns Monday were fielded by Tre Tucker, Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs, but a new option emerged in Tyreik McAllister. The former University of Charleston standout averaged nearly 15 yards per punt return and 25 yards per kick return his senior year. He previously spent time on the Denver Broncos practice squad in 2022.
  • While rookie Decamerion Richardson has been seeing a handful of first and second team reps at cornerback, he also showcased what he can provide on special teams as a gunner. With his elite speed, he found ways to get back to returners consistently throughout practice.

Quote of the Day

Just be dogs and get the ball. ... We've got to make people fear us, so that's that plan. Jakorian Bennett
